Today was my one year appointment with my Hematologist. One year ago, I went back to the ER nine days after my daughter was born. The diagnosis was DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis...a blood clot). More people die from DVTs and PEs (Pulmonary Embolism--when the blood clot travels to the heart or lungs) than from Breast Cancer, AIDS and traffic accidents combined. Over the last year, I have learned a lot about DVTs and what can cause them. What caused mine was a gene called Factor V Leiden, pregnancy and an emergency C-Section combined.
At my visit, my doctor decided to let me come off of coumadin, the drug I have been on for the last year. Coumadin keeps your blood thin, so that you won't get another clot. I am extremely thankful to be off of this drug for so many reasons. One is that, I can get pregnant again (when we decide the time is right)! If you're on coumadin, it is not recommended that you get pregnant as it causes facial deformities.
However, now that I have had one clot and I tested positive for the gene that predisposes me to getting blood clots, I will have to inject myself each day with blood thinners during any pregnancies in the future for the length of the pregnancy and 6 weeks post partum. It's no fun doing this, but a baby is MORE than worth it! Plus, because of my DVT, I discovered a new passion...babywearing!
Again, I'm so thankful that I was able to have my daughter safely, get to the hospital to receive treatment in a timely manner and now for being able to get off of this drug! God is good!

I had no idea that this could be done! I came across a post on The Babywearer with this title about a week ago. When I read the post, I saw a pretty, pretty pic of an ergo that had been hand dyed and "pimped." How fun! If you're "carrier crazy" you might want to check out her website: http://www.pimpmycarrier.com/ and peruse some of her handiwork. She does soft structured carriers and mei tais.

a substitute teacher...Well, I took Friday off so that I could spend the day with my favorite one year old on her birthday. I am a teacher and so I arranged for a substitute. This woman is actually a retired teacher, who taught at the school I now teach. It's always interesting when you get back from being off for a day. Sometimes the room is a disaster and sometimes you have very interesting notes. This morning the room was clean, but I had an "interesting" note.
"Dear Mrs. Stevens, We had a wonderful day except for Alan* and Frank*. They decided to see how far they could back away from the urinals in the bathroom and still make 'it' in..."
What?!?! My precious, sweethearts were urinating from across the restroom!??! Why??? I asked a teacher across the hall if she knew of the mayhem that went on while I was gone...yep, she did. She thought it was funny and maybe we could make it into a math lesson...calculating trajectory, etc. Gross!
Well, this short story has nothing to do with babywearing, but I hope you enjoyed it and maybe got a chuckle out of it, anyway!

Today is my DD's first birthday...it is so hard to believe and the time has really flown by. We've changed diapers, nursed, eaten, crawled, played, walked, and are now running! Becoming a mother has definitely been the adventure (and blessing) of a lifetime and I am excited to see what new experience each day of it brings. Thanks for sharing with us!

Did you know that Babywearing can improve your marriage??? I noticed this last weekend when we were at the wholesale shop stocking up on all our household wares. I observed a couple arguing about who was going to put their fussy son in the child seat of the shopping cart. Mama: "I'm not puttin' him in there." Papa: "Well I'm not puttin' him in there either!!" Hmmm...what to do? Babywearing to the rescue.
I often wear Kaelin while grocery shopping because she does not enjoy being in that seat for an extended amount of time. She wants to be an active part of what I'm doing! Moral of the story: Share the babywearing love with your spouse, and your house will be a happy home! Doesn't the mama pictured above look happy?

Angela Alexander is the "Active Mom." She has designed a brand new Soft Structured baby carrier called the Active Mom II. She designed it when she saw that most one sized carriers fit "some." She developed one (AMC II) that would fit most (everyone). She also developed this carrier with style and luxury in mind. The AMC II comes in fun, accent colors in sleek, ultrasuede fabric. You can choose which kind of lining you want: either plush, minky fabric or smooth, silky fabric. The AMC II will be spotlighted on The Babywearer the week of March 2. You can purchase your own AMC II right now at Heavenly Hold.

Today, we all went to Home Depot to get paint and garage organizers. We had fun popping all over the store checking out all the cool stuff. What made it really fun (and easy) though, was my Ellaroo Mei Hip. Kaelin enjoys riding in the shopping cart, but after a certain amount of time, she is just done! She wants out and she starts leaning out the sides of the cart at dangerously crazy angles. But today, she was comfy and happy riding on my hip...check out the fun print! BTW, this is not me and that is not Kaelin. You can see a picture of us at www.heavenlyhold.com

We are officially open for business! I've realized my dream of starting a business...I have been an entrepreneur my entire life. Some of my past businesses have included: Selling pumpkins that my Dad and I grew, door-to-door, selling my chickens eggs door-to-door, "The Nutcrackers"selling plain and candied walnuts with my friend, Tara. The walnuts came from her backyard. Perhaps one of the most interesting businesses I had was a Detective Agency...ummm, well, that one never really materialized....BUT, Heavenly Hold has. Please check us out: www.heavenlyhold.com. I'm currently offering FREE shipping on all baby carriers. Save us to your favorites!
