School is Out!

School actually got out LAST Friday, but I had to go in this week to finish things up and move my classroom upstairs for next year. I am so thankful for this year being over and really hope that after next year, I'll be able to take some time away from teaching to be with Kaelin at home. She is growing soooo fast! We went for her 15 month checkup yesterday (the first time I've gotten to take her to a doctor's appointment in a whole year!) and she's doing great! She still has the heart murmur, but the doctor says it sounds like a perfectly normal one.

She weighed in at 21 lbs. 4 oz. and measured 31 1/4". She has REALLY started to grow rapidly since she began eating table food! She was so small for so long. People couldn't believe she was the age she was! But that is behind us! Poor baby got 2 shots. One for Chicken Pox and one for meningitis/pneumonia. I wish I knew more about what shots are absolutely necessary and which are voluntary, but I don't, so I just went ahead with them.

At 15 months, Kaelin still takes a morning nap at 10am and an afternoon nap at 3pm. Sometimes each nap is 2 hours long! I'm so thankful. It allows me to get some work done for Heavenly Hold. She goes to bed each night at 8pm, too! What a good little girl! I love her so much!

Kaelin's "Shopping Spree"

Yesterday and today, my good friend and neighbor Steph did a show at her friend's house. Stephanie owns MonkeeMoos, a children's boutique with fun and funky clothes and accessories, and, of course, I own Heavenly Hold.

We each showcased our wares and assisted local shoppers. It was really fun for me to help mamas try on samples of my carriers. Of course you need to try before you buy! By the way, if you're in metro Atlanta and are interested in a babywearing demo party, email me!

Anyway, Stephanie got some Teething Bling from me, and I got some Daily Tea from her. Daily Tea is a fun brand that has lots of mix and match pieces and it's priced really reasonably. What do you think of the summer romper I got Kaelin? I also got her some hair clips that are by Rock-a-Bow Baby! Cute!

Action Baby Carrier is here!!

The much anticipated new Soft Structured Baby Carrier is at Heavenly Hold! I have been getting phone calls and PM's and emails like crazy about this new carrier. It's made by the same couple that makes the Active Mom Carriers. It has the same fantastic features, but it's made for summertime's super cool and breathable!

The Action Baby Carrier has a waist that will go from 28-54 inches without a waist extender. It has a sleeping hood for sleepy little ones. The webbing in the waist belt is super supportive and can hold your newborn up to 35 lbs. You can wear the Action Baby Carrier on your front, your back or your hip...whichever you (or your baby) prefers!

Another great feature of this new carrier is the PRICE! There are Soft Structured Carriers that go upwards of $160!!! Most are around the $100 mark at minimum. The new Action Baby Carrier comes in three different solids: Navy, Chocolate, or Olive (all with coordinating khaki) for $79 and three patterns: Larissa (black straps), So Square (black straps) and Spring Breeze (navy straps) for $89.

Hope you'll check out the Action Baby Carrier at Heavenly Hold!

Another New Baby Carrier...Baby K'tan!

I got another new baby carrier this week. I had started carrying Baby K'tan at Heavenly Hold, but hadn't been able to try it out yet. Michal at Baby K'tan was sweet enough to send one out to me! Now I can give my honest opinion of the new carrier.

Baby K'tan is a wrap style carrier that is pre-tied to simplify the "wrapping" process. The Baby K'tan is two loops of fabric that are joined by a band which is actually lumbar support. The lumbar support is fully adjustable and definitely makes the carry easier on your back! The carrier is slightly stretchy and comes with a very ample instruction card. Even I found the instructions VERY simple to follow and learn.

The first carry I tried was the "hug" position. All 21 lbs of Kaelin felt VERY secure. I really wish I'd had a K'tan from Kaelin's birth so I could have enjoyed the maximum benefit of this cuddly carrier. Be sure to go browse through the Baby K'tans at Heavenly Hold.

It's free and it's easy...go here

I'm saving mine for when Kaelin is on her way to being potty trained!

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Teething Bling!

If you have a baby, you're going to be going through times of teething, unavoidably. I (being the silly first time mother I am) thought that since Kaelin had gotten her top 4 teeth and 3 on the bottom months and months ago, I thought that the worst was behind us. You know drooling, whining, gnawing, biting, clinging...that sort of fun stuff!

But, no, the worst of teething was not behind us. She's getting her fourth tooth on the bottom now and it's a doozy! AND, from what I hear, the molars (which she could be getting at any time) could be worse!

Enter, Teething Bling by Smart Mom Jewelry. This innovative line of jewelry allows you to actually wear some, and let's your child have a teething toy nearby at the same time.

Teething Bling is 100% lead and BPA free and completely non toxic. The jewelry looks like real stones, but it is actually made from teething material! I have several pieces and LOVE it! I had given up on wearing necklaces, but these are fabulous. The bangles also work well to slip off and hand over to Kaelin when she needs a distraction or something to gnaw on. Please click over to Heavenly Hold and check out our Teething Bling!

I Just Joined the Bad Mommy's Club

There are actually several reasons why I have my membership card to the Bad Mommy's Club...

1. I sometimes turn my head while cleaning up after dinner when I see K picking up carrots off the floor and eating them.

2. I got on the treadmill while wearing K on my back (just walking!) over the weekend.

3. I cook while babywearing.

4. I love to let K run around in just her diaper and T shirt...she doesn't always have an "outfit" on.

5. She shares ice cream with me and now Oreos with Daddy!

6. Sometimes, I just don't feel like playing! And I don't...but I feel guilty for not...

Why the Bjorn and Snugli are Bad for Baby

Before my babywearing education...After my babywearing education....

I see these types of carriers ALL THE TIME...I actually started wearing Kaelin in a Snugli because I didn't know there were any other options! I did have some qualms about how she was carried in the Snugli, though. It just didn't look like it was a comfortable ride with her legs dangling underneath each other. But, I put it out of my mind because she was only 6-7 pounds for the longest time.

When I learned about other kinds of babywearing, I got an Ergo Baby Carrier. I saw what a difference it made in her positioning...she no longer had all the weight distributed to her crotch area in an Ergo. She was sitting on her bum with her legs spread around me...which is actually a very NATURAL position to carry a baby in! It made so much sense to me. As adults we sit on our bums!

Snuglis and Bjorns also really aren't very supportive for the babywearer. They do not have supportive straps or distribute much of the weight to the wearer's waist like a Soft Structured Carrier or Mei Tai does.

If you want to read some more information about what kinds of spinal problems a Bjorn or Snugli type carrier can cause for a baby, read this article.

Sign up for RME and get $25!!

There's a new way to pay for things over the internet and it's called RME. RME stands for Revolutionary Money Exchange. It's like PayPal, but there are no fees (for the seller). When you sell something using PayPal, you have to fork 3% of the retail price over to PayPal...a real bummer!

Sign up for a free RME account today (you don't have to be a retailer to do this...just a regular person) and get $25 in your bank account. For each person that you refer, you'll also get an additional $10...pretty cool, huh?

What Have You Done Recently While Babywearing?

I've been a little MIA lately...working a lot on Heavenly Hold, adding new products and managing the contest I'm currently running. I've missed you all!

SOOOO...lots of us are babywearers and all of us love to cuddle with our babies! Sometimes we babywear because we want to be close and keep our babies calm. Sometimes we babywear out of practicality or neccessity!

The question I ask you today is, "What have you done recently while babywearing?" I'll start: I've cooked, swept the floor, got an estimate for a fence in the backyard, exercised and shopped at Target! Oh! And I made spaghetti for dinner the other night and had to put Kaelin on my back when she got tired of playing with "her" cooking utensils on the floor.

Day Care Disco

I'm a teacher. Most of you probably know that already. This year, I've been blessed to have my sister in law take care of Kaelin, and it has been WONDERFUL! Next year, my cousin has said she would keep Kaelin for 4 days a week and my husband would keep her on Fridays because he works from home. While we are sooo thankful for my cousin, she lives in the opposite direction of where we both work about 1/2 an hour. This would mean if I took Kaelin I would travel north for 30 minutes, drop her off and then travel south for about an hour each day...two times a day...same thing for my hubby...not very desirable especially with gas so high.

Now, we're discussing trying to get in on a nanny share with another teacher at my school (she lives near the school) for next year...this would really be great, but I also hate to not go with my cousin, who is now counting on Kaelin being with her and the extra $$...

We are trying to rent or sell our house and move closer to my cousin, but in this's not been easy. What do y'all do for childcare, if you work outside the home?

6 random things about me

1. I've ridden across the country on a Greyhound bus...after I graduated from college, I did this because I wanted to see the entire country (from RI to CA) and I had A LOT of stuff!

2. I only knew my husband 3 weeks before we got engaged and I only knew him 8 weeks before we eloped and got married in 2003!!

3. I have a business degree, but have been teaching public school for the past 6 years thanks to Teach for America.

4. I was the valedictorian of my high school. Actually, there were 4 of us that shared this title and there were only a total of 80 people in my class altogether.

5. I like to exercise and had always been in shape until I had Kaelin and then got a DVT in my leg after her birth...I'm sadly so out of shape, now! But would LOVE to get back into shape.

6. I like to listen to Christian in Atlanta, I listen to 104.7 The Fish...I can't even really tell you my favorite artists, because I don't always know who sings what...a few: Nichole Nordeman, Salvador, Lifehouse, Jeremy Camp and others!

I'm not tagging anyone, but feel free to copy and post this yourselves!

My Food Saver Drama

I got a Food Saver (you know, the machine that you can use to freeze dry food that you prepare ahead of time) for Christmas from my parents. I was soooo excited!! I baked some bread and tried to suck all the air out (with the machine, not my mouth!) and seal the bag around it, but it didn't work. I spent some time on the phone with the service/troubleshooting department and they couldn't figure out what was wrong.

They told me to send it back to them and they wanted me to ship means me pay to ship it! I said no way...this is a brand new Food Saver and I haven't even gotten to use it! So then they agreed to send me a prepaid shipping label.

I sent it back according the instructions and didn't hear anything for a month. Then I kind of forgot about it until last week (I know, ridiculous). I called the company and asked if my Food Saver was fixed and why I didn't have it. They told me that I was supposed to call them after I sent it to make sure they sent it back to me. Huh? This wasn't in the instructions. They told me that they would send it right out to me and I would get it within two weeks. OK. That's fine.

A week later I got a package from Food Saver. A very small package. They sent me a new Food Saver because they couldn't fix my old one, but this one was the "compact" version. I didn't have a compact version! I called them AGAIN, and told them this wasn't my Food Saver and I was upset now!

The lady was very nice and said she would send me out the Deluxe version which retails for $280 and was an upgrade from the one I had. I said thank you very much, that is very nice of you to do that. She also actually apologized...that's almost unheard of today in customer service!

So, I will be (probably) doing some cooking soon and using my new Food Saver to store the food in my freezer for quick and easy dinner nights!

Does My Baby Love the Cat More Than Me?

I was soooooo excited to see Kaelin after work yesterday! She and my SIL were on the porch waiting for me to get home and I rolled my window down and called out her name and could barely get the car in park before I was getting out to scoop her up! Normally she hugs and kisses me and wants me to hold her when I get home, but today, Calvin was nearby. Calvin is the cat. Calvin got all the screams of excitement and ALL the LOVE!!!

No worries, though...I got love later! SIL said she did great at the awards banquet, ate a lot (I'm not shocked), slept fine and had fun playing at MIL's house.

Don't forget to enter the contest at Heavenly Hold!

Couple Time Tales

Adrian and I came home from work REALLY missing Kaelin yesterday. We both had called SIL to check on her (and of course, she was fine) during the day.

We went to a movie (our first one since her birth) and we saw "Vantage Point," a suspenseful, mystery with Dennis Quaid and Forrest Whittaker. It's not a brand new release, but we only paid 75 cents each to see the movie! We have this fun theater near our old house called The Picture Show and it's normally $1.50, but on Tuesday's it's only 75 cents! Cool. We shared a suicide Icee during the movie and really enjoyed it. At the end of the movie, my phone vibrated and I freaked out, but it was just my Aunt Randi in Nevada, so I tried to get my heart to stop racing and enjoy the end of the movie.

After the movie we stopped at Home Depot and got some sand for guess who's new sand table...Yes, we were thinking about our little darling! We also called again on the way home to check. She was still up at 9pm, but SIL said she was happy (they had just gotten home from the awards banquet). Adrian and I even took a late night walk around the block before bed. It felt really weird to be walking the neightborhood without my girl.

I'll get to see her after school today...can't wait!!

Sleep Away Camp

Tonight will be Kaelin's first night away from us...(other than the time I was hospitalized after her birth for my DVT!). My husband's sister takes care of her and she will be taking Kaelin to a senior awards night for their other sister and then they will be spending the night at Kaelin's grandmother's house. Daddy woke up with a high level of separation anxiety and started ticking off all the things his sister would have to take. He carried Kaelin's bathtub, bathtoys, diapers, wipes, books, toys, pack and play, and all kinds of other baby paraphernalia downstairs. He loaded all of it in his sister's car including the stroller. Then he made sure that I had written instructions for everything that she might need. Keep in mind that his sister takes care of Kaelin all day, everyday so she is very knowledgeable of all things Kaelin.

Last night Kaelin (finally) started to get her fourth bottom tooth, so she was restless and I ended up giving her Tylenol so she could get to sleep...of course, he started worrying that it might not be a good night for her to be away because of this.

I have really mixed emotions...I am going to miss her TO PIECES, but I'm not anxious about her being with my sister in law. I have the utmost confidence in her abilities and Kaelin LOVES her. So, I will really miss Kaelin, but I think it will be nice to get our first "date" night in. We seriously haven't been together on an outing or even had any time for just the two of us since Kaelin was born. Heck, we might get crazy and even go to the movies on a (gasp!) school night!

A Baby Friendly Yard

We have recently discovered that Kaelin LOVES to be outside in our miniscule backyard. There is really nothing out there, but a concrete pad outside the door and a small patch of grass. We are strongly considering fencing the yard because we have a drop off between our yard and our neighbors. I need some ideas on what we should do to make our backyard more "Kaelin friendly." Getting a gorgeous wooden play structure is unfortunately NOT an option (I wish it were). We just don't have the room. Any ideas?? Help!
