ERGO Performance Review

Sleeping hood/pocket compartment

Shoulder Straps and Chest Strap

Inside of Body and Structured Waist (note the mesh lining on parts of the body)

Heavenly Hold carries the new ERGO Performance baby carrier in stock and ready to ship (for FREE!).

My thoughts on ERGO's newest innovation are pretty positive so far at this early stage! I love, love, love all shades of green, so I'm a real sucker for the Spring Green ERGO Performance. The Grey is pretty sharp looking too!

There are quite a few differences between the ERGO Performance and the Standard ERGO. The shoulder straps are a big one...the straps on the Performance are waaaay less padded, but in a good way! The straps still felt supportive with my chubby girl and I, of course with a chubby baby, LOVE the ERGO's seat darts which really give the baby a true, ergonomic seat to sit in. I also like that there is a touch of leg padding on the sides of the body to cushion baby's legs.

The Performance is 1/3 lighter than the standard ERGO (yippee for summertime babywearing!) and it's made of breathable fabric. It does still have a sleeping hood, but instead of just rolling up in the pocket (yes! There IS a pocket!!!), it rolls up and then the pocket can zip shut (and the hood will stay put!). The hood seems really breathable, too and can also be detached.

The inside of the body is lined with mesh panels and Cool Max lining which also gives it more breathability. Not sure how much cooler this will actually make you when babywearing in the heat, but every little bit helps!

If you have any questions about the ERGO Performance or any other baby carriers, feel free to contact me! I'm always super happy to help...and sell you an ERGO!

Great review! Very helpful. Also, I wanted to mention that I get such great review of your customer service. You recently sold a Sakura Bloom to some people who got it as a shower gift for a gal who hosted a Babywearing Road Show (follow all that, ha!). Anyway, they just raved about how nice and helpful you were. And the sling is great. What an awesome shower gift, eh?

Hi. I just got a gray performance and was wondering if your child feels comfortable with the mesh lining. It seems to be more rough/stiff and my almost 3 month old baby always cries when I put him in it (his legs are still not able to fully wrap around me so it's wrapped inside). Every time I take him out of the carrier, his thighs have red markings everywhere. Also because it's higher than the Original, my baby can't see out and greatly dislikes it. I want to love it so much, but my baby's not liking it at all. Is it wrong that I'm wanting to return my performance to get an older version?

Amber said...

To Anonymous- I don't think it's wrong to like the original better at all! Whatever works for you and your baby...I say go with it! : )

Anonymous said...

I have 2 Ergo originals for my twin boys, and I love using it with the front pouch. My husband though, does not care for the bulkiness of it. I was looking into the Performance carrier, due to the heat and humidity where I am. If you are interested in a trade, I have a camel original (only used 2 times in the winter). Thanks for the thoughts on the Performance.

Cindy said...

Do your shoulder feel less comfortable while wearing Ergo performance?

Amber said...

Cindy, I thought I did at first b/c the shoulders were different, but after wearing it for a while I realized that they were just that...different, but not uncomfortable. But I imagine they feel differently on everyone! : )

Audrey said...

Thanks for the review Amber. I have never used an Ergo, but my friends love the Sport and original... so trying to decide what to buy for me and #3. I am wondering if the fabric seems if it would wash well? Hold up as well if washed? Any thoughts? Will you continue to use anther Ergo? Or stick with this one?

Amber said...

Audrey- Oh I definitely use my original plenty! I would say that if you're only getting one, I would go with an original. I am really liking the new Performance, BUT I think its a great compliment to my stash but I wouldn't want it to be my sole carrier. I still wear my 3 1/2 yo and she's more comfy in my original than in my Performance.

Louise said...

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering about the hood being black. Does this not mean that the baby's head gets very hot in the sun? Many thanks, Louise

Amber said...

Louise- The hood is one of my favorite things about the ERGO and I'm really loving the hood on the Performance because it is reallllly light and breathable. Definitely allows more airflow than the standard ERGO's hood. LOVE it!

And the hood on the grey one is a pale grey.

Jarrod said...

Just bought the Ergo performance. I like the way the shoulder straps are contoured, but when I tried it in the hip carrying mode, the contoured strap didn't lie flat on my shoulder. Is this true of the original as well? Or am I just doing something wrong with the performance?

Amber said...

Jarrod, no, I haven't had that happen with the original. BUT the hip carry position isn't too comfy for long periods of time, in my opinion.

jennifer said...

Hi!
I have never had an ergo carrier but am not finding my BabaSling comfortable at all and have heard great things about the ergo.
I live in London but will be home in Hawaii for 6 weeks over Xmas and was thinking the Performance would be a good choice because it will be cooler. But, my baby is 3 months old and I have read that it may come up too high on him.
Would you suggest the Performance, Original, or Sport? My husband and I would both like to use it and only want to buy one.
And, do you have any of the Performance in Grey in stock?
Thanks!!

Amber said...

Hi Jennifer! Yes! I do think the Performance would be the best choice for you! It does not come up any higher than the original, but at 3 mos, your baby may or may not be able to split his legs. You may need to use a swaddle blanket to boost him up a little bit higher. I DO have the grey one in stock! : )

jennifer said...

Great! Thanks for the quick response. Where are you based? And how much does it cost? (I oddly can't seem to figure out if this is a UK or US blog!)

Amber said...

No problem. In in the US (georgia) and it's $120 with free (US) shipping. : )

jennifer said...

Thanks! I'm trying to find it in stock in the UK but will get back to you if I can't find it.

Anonymous said...

I read that the grey and green performance have different fabrics. Is one cooler or more comfortable? Do you know if there is a significant difference?

Anonymous said...

I'm too wanting to get one, love the green color, but would like to know too which is better green or grey.

Amber said...

There is a difference in the fabrics.. They grey is a little less natural feeling, but seems like it would be more waterproof (and maybe cooler--can't really say there as I hadn't noticed too much of a difference thus far...but I've only worn it from Oct on). The green does feel a little closer to cotton-y. I honestly can't decide which one I like better...I am naturally drawn to the bright green color, but I have worn the grey a fair amount and like it, too! I do have both of them in stock for Christmas presents! http://www.heavenlyhold.com/category_77/Baby-Carriers.htm

Anonymous said...

I want an Ergo Performance but have read that the shoulder and waist straps are to long for some petite women. IS this true? From what height is it good for?

misslish said...

I am trying to decide between the Ergo Sport vs Performance. I live in Florida where the summer months are super hot and humid... is the Performance much cooler than the Sport?

Amber said...

Hi Misslish! I'm in GA...so very hot here, too! I far prefer the Performance over the Sport. I totally miss the pocket and the wonderful hood on the Sport! Also, in my opinion there isn't a huge difference temperature wise between the two...babywearing in the summer heat is HOT no matter what you're wearing! haha! Feel free to call or email me if you have other questions you'd like answered! I'm happy to help!

misslish said...

Thanks Amber - good to know.
I'm still wondering though: if there isn't much difference in the heat factor of perfomance vs sport, what are the differences which, in your opinion, make the performance superior?
I guess I was thinking the temperature difference was the biggest "plus"...

Amber said...

@Misslish - I like the sleeping hood on the Performance much better than the hood on the Sport...I also like the pocket on the Performance better. Also, the look of the Performance is so much cuter than the look of the Sport, to me! ; )

lorijewel said...

I purchased the performance Ergo for my 4 month old and love it. The decision was a big struggle and after reading that you wouldn't have it as your sole carrier I worry that I should have gotten the original. I was wondering, when are they big enough to see over the ledge? My poor little guy still sinks in and cant see a thing.

Amber said...

Hi Lori! Just as your LO grows they'll be able to see over the top...it will happen!! ; ) As long as he's happy! I wouldn't have it as my sole carrier b/c now that I've used it a bunch more with my two heavy's (30+ each), I don't think the straps are as supportive as the straps on the original. I should probably rewrite the review, even though I still do like it! I just probably have more insights now. : )

PudgeeBunny said...

Hi, I was wondering if you were able to compare the Sports to the Performance versions of the Ergo Baby. I'm really curious to know which is less bulkier when it comes to storing it under a stroller. Is there a difference?

I was using a Bjorn (Active model) but gave up on it once my baby hit 9 month. All it did was kill my shoulder blades & lower back!

Amber said...

@Pudgee - The Sport is my least favorite of the three ERGO's. I don't care for the "vent" and the lack of a pocket. The straps on the Performance are molded, so they are similar to your bjorn in that sense, but it will be way more comfy for a 9 month old with the soft structured waist! : ) Both would fold down similarly in size. I do a trial program of them here: http://www.heavenlyhold.com/category_91/Baby-Carrier-Rental.htm Happy to help!

Samantha said...

I'm thinking about getting the original -organic Ergo. I have a 3 mo baby and she has pretty good head control. I was wondering if I would need the heart2heart insert? Also, how hot does the original get? I am debating on getting the Performance just for the heat factor. Thanks!

Amber said...

Hi Samantha! At 3 mos, I would bypass the heart to heart...she should be either at or close enough to the weight limit and esp if she has good head control, could sit up in the carrier on her own, probably. I think you'd be wasting your $$. To me, babywearing in the summer is hot no matter what you wear. I do like the original a little bit better than the Performance b/c of the super supportive straps, but the Performance is really nice, too! I probably grab my original more, though. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm happy to help (or ship you out a carrier today!!!) :)

Anonymous said...

thanks amber for your review! I am deciding between organic and performance - and very humid where i am - which would you recommend? i also want something light, and easy to transport (like to stash into a bag...). I saw a comment on the material being rough for babies (mine's 3mo), is this your experience with the performance? Thanks a bunch!

Amber said...

@Anonymous - I would definitely say that an original organic is going to be a softer choice for a little babe! You can add on the pouch or the backpack to stow away stuff in the original (the Performance has the cargo pack). It's very humid here in GA, too...and my take is that you're going to be hot no matter what carrier you're wearing while babywearing in the summer! Feel free to email me if you have other questions before you purchase! I'm happy to help! amber (at) heavenlyhold.com

Vanessa Cavagnaro said...

Do you ship the ergo internationally? If so, How much to ship the performance to Australia? Many thanks.

Amber said...

Sorry, Vanessa! No international shipping at this time, but I'm sure there is a retailer in AUS!

Hi Amber,
What's the best Ergo for a 33 lb. toddler?

We had the original but lost it. I was thinking of getting the performance but i saw in an earlier post that (I think) your toddler likes the original better.
Thank you!
Lisa

Amber said...

Hey Lisa! My 2 yo is 30 lbs and I like the original/organic best! The straps offer me the most support for sure! I do wear her some in the Performance, but I don't find it to support her weight as well.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the speedy reply!

All the best,
Lisa

Anonymous said...

Do you have any tips on using the hood in the performance ergo. Where is attaches on the straps seems too low, so it does really support the head of the my 8 month old (she is very tall). The hood ends up bunched up by her neck. Is it a poor design or am I doing something wrong? From photos it seems the hood attaches much higher on the straps of the original.

Anonymous said...

hi there, i am also confused of choosing between Original or the Performance.
I travel a lot and I mostly live in a tropical country which is hot (never cold).

I had been using Baby Bjorn and caused such pain in my back and shoulder.

Please recommend which one I should get, I'm not concerned about price

Amber said...

My all time favorite is the ERGO original. While I do like the Performance, I don't feel like it's significantly cooler...but that's just me...you might feel a huge difference and love it! The main thing that I don't care for on the Performance, is that I miss the nicely padded straps of the original.

Anonymous said...

I was wondering what your review was on the petunia pickle organics vs the orginal ergo? trying to decide between the two

Amber said...

@Anonymous - When comparing the two original versions - the organic vs. the organic Petunia Pickle Bottom, there are a few slight differences. Both are "originals" in design, but the pocket on the PPB is different. It isn't a zippered, deep, wide pocket. The PPB's pocket is a tall pocket that is open at the top. If you're comparing an original in an organic fabric and the PPB, the original in the organic fabric is a bit softer than the PPB. The PPB's feel pretty similar to an original in a non organic fabric. But they are soo pretty! I have all of them in stock: http://www.heavenlyhold.com/category_78/Organic-Baby-Carriers.htm Please let me know if I can help in any other way! I'm happy to!

Katie said...

Another question about the Petunia Picklebottom v. the "Original" Organic, is there a sleeping hood on the Petunia Picklebottom? If not, it seems that by going with the style of the PP (which I love) I'd be missing out on the perks of the traditional ERGO? Are the straps equally as comfy?

Amber said...

Hi Katie! Yes, the PPB does have a sleeping hood and the straps are just as comfy as the straps on the original, but you are missing the great zippered pocket! Let me know if you need more help finding an ERGO! You'll get a free infant insert if you order soon!! I'm happy to help! amber (at) heavenlyhold . com

Andrea said...

Thanks so much for the info on this website! From your info, it looks like you would recommend the ergo original over any other carriers, including the ergo choices or any other brand. Besides the fabric, is there any difference between the original and original organic?

Amber said...

@Andrea - You're welcome! Nope...original and original organics are the same in design...just differences in fabric! I have them here: http://www.heavenlyhold.com/category_65/ERGO-Baby-Carriers.htm Please let me know if I can help you in any other way!

Amanda said...

Wow so glad I read this was pretty much sold on the performance but was just a little worried the straps wouldn't be as comfy as the original, thanks for this :) going to get the original seems the performance isn't significantly cooler, I'm in nz so it doesn't get too hot in summer anyway. Was just worried about the original getting too hot while going for long walks

Hi Amber, do you have the ergo performance true blue in stock? Some people said the shoulder straps had been improved in true blue version, is that true? Thanks!

Amber said...

@Anonymous - Yes! I do have the True Blue in stock (and it's gorgeous) and you're right, the straps have been improved in the newest models...more support and more give to fit more body types better! Please email me if you have any other questions amber(at)heavenlyhold.com and the True Blue's are here: http://www.heavenlyhold.com/item_437/ERGO-Performance-True-Blue.htm

Walker said...

A few questions: is the fabric of the true blue different than the spring green? also, are the straps on the true blue different than those on the spring green or are the straps inproved on all the performance model colors now? thanks

considering the green but wanted to hear from you first.

Amber said...

Hi Walker - Yes! The fabric on the Spring Green and the True Blue is the same...the grey's are a little different. The straps on the newer version are improved (True Blue) and they're on sale soon here from me! http://www.heavenlyhold.com/item_437/ERGO-Performance-True-Blue.htm
Happy to help!

Kirsten said...

When you say the straps are improved, are they more comfortable and more padded now? I am torn between the original/organic and the performance. I like the lightweight, sporty look and wicking material to keep baby cooler but like the comfort of the organic. There is nowhere near me that has the performance to try on to compare comfort to the organic. How are the straps different from the first version of the performance? Do you have the charcoal/black one? Is that the same material as the spring green? Thanks for your time!

Amber said...

Hey Kirsten! I would say that yes, the straps on the newer carriers are more padded and they are improved in that they have more give at the shoulders in the way that the straps do on the originals. There is a part that has no padding so it allows the strap to move more. The rest of the strap is still molded. I do like the sporty look, but have to say that I probably still grab my original organic more often. The Charcoal/Black one is a different feeling fabric than the Spring Green one. It has the more "waterproof" feeling fabric and I'm currently out, but should have more of them in a week. If you'd like me to hold a Charcoal/Black for you and ship it out as soon as it gets here, let me know! I'm happy to help: amber @ heavenlyhold . com (with no spaces) Thanks for posting!

Hi,

Love the comments, live in a generally hot Asian country. I like the performance over the original on a man for some reason just looks cooler? The straps on the original look very bulky but fashion shouldn't matter much. One thing, in Japan, Ergo are everywhere!!! What a boom, just crazy. But, they look HUGEEEEEEEEE on the Japanese women who are tiny, just huge. I think i'll buy the performance!

Lina said...

Hi Amber,
My husband is really tall (6'6) and athletic, will it be an issue for him to carry our little man (8 m.o.)? When you say that the new version are more padded, when did they make the change? We have the babybjorn and it's not a vital option for our trip to Spain in the end of May. Thanks, Lina

Anonymous said...

Great Reviews. Very helpful I am definitely planning to buy Ergo carrier. But I am bit confused between Ergo Original and Ergo Performance. I am 5 feet and my husabnd is 5feet 10 inches. Which one would you recommend, we live in texas where the weather is hot. But as I read in couple of your posts that there is no significant difference in temperatures while baby wearing and baby wearing in summer is gonna be hot. No matter what and that makes perfect sense to me. So looks like I am more inclined towards original except the fact that I have read that it is too bulky. Please suggest which wone should I go for given I am petite. Are soulder straps on Performance as comfy as Original?

Amber said...

Hi Lina and Anonymous -

The changes are in the straps. There is now more movement allowed at the top of the shoulder straps where they attach to the body. And that's a good thing to me! I like it. They're also a bit more padded, but still not as padded as the original.

Anonymous - as far as being petite and wearing an ERGO, I can say that I've had many local ladies try on carriers here (petite ladies) and be shocked that they like the ERGO as well as they did. It's really all about personal preference, so it's hard for me to say if you'd find the love or not, though. To me, the straps are more comfy and more supportive on the original than on the performance :) Please let me know if you have other questions before you purchase! I'm happy to help (and I do have the new Outback in stock, too! ; )

Trying to find best option. I keep bouncing back in forth with all carriers. I live in Germany right now and plan on doing a lot of traveling soon with our 4 month old. i really want comfort since my husband and i do lots of walking when traveling. Not sure if i should also go with one of the lighter and cooler ones since must of our traveling will be during the warmer seasons and not winter. Which one is most comforatble for both mom and baby? Does the sport or performance make a huge difference as far as being hot. Or do you think its really minimal and should just go with comfort?

Anonymous said...

Love the Performance when on the back or front, but can't seem to get is comfortable in the side carry position, straps don't lie right.

Any ideas?

Amanda Anderson said...

Hi, I live in Savannah Ga and am trying to decide between the Organic and the Performance. As you know it is HOT here in the summer. Do the changes to the straps make it worth getting now or would you still suggest the Organic?

Amber said...

Hi Amanda! I am a lover of the original more than the Performance...and I feel like you'll be hot babywearing in the summer no matter what you wear unfortunately. Wrap up one of those flat ice packs in a wash cloth and put it btwn the two of you! :) Happy to help!

Anonymous said...

I want to purchase the performance ergo, but What is the difference between the original infant insert and performance insert besides price?

Amber said...

Hi Anonymous! The ERGO Performance Infant insert is made from the same cool max mesh lining and it has a wicking layer as well (so designed to be cooler). I carry them at Heavenly Hold as well as the original Heart 2 Heart ones, too. :) http://www.heavenlyhold.com/item_876/ERGO-Performance-Infant-Insert.htm

Amanda Anderson said...

Do you perfer the ergo over the beco?

Amber said...

Hi Amanda! That's a tough question...it truly depends on the situation and on the age of the baby...Beco Butterfly II is a no go for me (and it's discontinued). I do love the Gemini but it doesn't work too well for my 3 yo anymore...the ERGO give me more support with her. I also LOVE the sleeping hood on the ERGO better than any carrier I've ever tried (the Gemini doesn't really have a hood, but just a head rest). Feel free to email me or call me with any other questions! I'm happy to help!

Hi,

I live in Vancouver, BC Canada. I am debating between the trueblue performance and the black on black organic original. I am extremely torn as I like the fabric on the performance but I know that the pads on the straps of the organic seems thicker. Weather in Vancouver is mild with lots of rain. I am all about comfort and intend to only buy one carrier for my baby. Any advice on which one to go with? Are there any other differences between the two carriers that I should consider? Thanks!!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the great review. I was wondering if there was any difference between the original and the performance for hiking? Also my main concern is back support. I know you stated you like the straps on the original best but would you say the back support is better as well? Thanks for the info!

Vicki Sosko said...

I have been looking into buying yet another baby carrier. I have two sling cariers and a snugli structured carrier. I am not a fan on the slings as I still keep a hand on her cause i feel like she will fall out, and the snugli kills my back. I have been debating back and forth on which carrier would be best for us. My daughter will be 6 months old next week. I have been looking at the Ergo original or the performance. Any ideas?

Amber said...

Hi Vicki,

An ERGO is going to be faaaar better and more comfortable for you compared to the snugli and the slings. In my opinion, I would go for the original. I prefer the padding on the straps and feel like they give me more support :) Happy to help!

Anon said...

Hi! I'm really torn between the Organic and the performance in true blue. I've heard the performance is better for petite body types as the straps on the original feel too far apart. Also, I've heard women with smaller body types feel like the original is way too bulky. But, I've tried the performance and my 1 year old seems to feel too constricted ( he really likes the Bjorn which KILLS my back and shoulders).

Amber said...

Hi Anon! Thanks for your comment...I actually would choose the original...I've helped many petite mamas who have ended up with the original and been really happy with it :) I have many in stock and can ship right away at Heavenly Hold as well :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks for all the commentary, very helpful.
I am in GA with a newborn looking forward to a whole summer of carrying. My takeaway from your comments is that the temp difference is not worth giving up the comfort of the original Ergo.
I am wondering if it would make any sense to put the performance infant insert into the original Ergo and get a tiny benefit from the mesh material? Also, by the time LO grows out of the insert, summer will be over and the original ergo would be my choice.
I might be overthinking this....
A friend of mine suggested I should not waste the $ on the infant insert and just go without? He is a tall boy, but he is still a newborn without head control, so I am a bit reluctant to follow her advice. What do you think?

Suzanne Prior said...

Hi there! I know this review is old, but I thought I'd ask a few questions and I hope you can help. I am interested in an Ergo Performance. I am curious about the colors and materials each color come in now in 2013. Which color combination is the newest? Also, I've heard some are more mesh some more cotton, is this true? If so, which colors are each materials? Thanks!!

Anonymous said...

I am curious about the True Blue performance by ergo I have seen online on Amazon and Ebay. On the ergobaby official site they do not have the true blue under the performance or anywhere else on the site. Is this true blue performance an authentic ergobaby?

Suzanne Prior said...

I asked Ergo's website a similar question. And this was their response: The Green and Tan ones were manufactured in 2010. The Black/Grey and True Blue came out in 2011. The only one we are currently still manufacturing is the Black/Grey one. -- I wouldn't know if something was authentic for sure or not…I read a few ebay reviews and it made me not want to risk ebay. I have not bought on amazon before so I can't give any input. I did purchased an Ergo Performance from http://www.albeebaby.com last week (in blue.) I'm hoping for the best. Good luck.
